Supported by the National Science Foundation Through a grant to the University of Florida, the National Science Foundation supports one-day methods workshops at professional meetings of anthropologists. The next two workshops will be held at the meetings of the American Anthropological Association in Washington, DC, November 28-December 2, 2007. These workshops are: (1) Introduction to Social Network Analysis, offered on Thursday, November 29, 2007 by Jeffrey Johnson and Christopher McCarty; and (2) Demystifying SPSS™: Anthropological Data Management and Analysis Made Easy, offered on Friday, November 30, 2007 by William W. Dressler and Kathryn S. Oths. Workshop DescriptionsDemystifying SPSS™: Anthropological Data Management and Analysis Made Easy This one-day course covers data definition, data transformation, data analysis, and the production and interpretation of graphical output. Workshop participants do hands-on application with actual data sets (provided). Part of the course is devoted to the “five things one needs to know about statistics” (prior experience with statistics is not required). Participants provide their own laptop and copy of SPSS™. Introduction to social network analysis Social network analysis (SNA) is the study of patterns of human relations. Participants learn about whole networks (relations within groups) and personal networks (relations surrounding individuals). This one-day, introductory, hands-on workshop uses examples from anthropological research. Whole networks are analyzed using UCINET, NetDraw and Visualyzer; personal networks are analyzed using EgoNet. Free short-term demos are available for these programs.
